3. Data sets: Data sets that support teaching and learning activities.
4. Audiovisual Materials: Materials that support courses and research. DVDs and CDs are the preferred
media.
5. Streaming Video Services: Streaming videos services that supplement academic curriculum and research
needs.
Major Selection Criteria:
In making informed judgments about the value of adding new materials to the collection, the following criteria
will be weighed:
• Curriculum support
• Short- and long-term value of the content
• Comparison in content and scope with other resources in the collection
• Authority of author/publisher/vendor
• Timeliness
• Intended audience/relative difficulty
• Cost
• Suitability of format
• Utility of prior versions of product
• Pressing or observed need
• Special needs (a visiting lecturer, physically challenged students or faculty, etc.)
• Trends and developments
• Fulfillment of consortia or partner agreements (if applicable)
• Library space
Exclusions:
• The library does not collect print textbooks for students. A small number of copies of print textbooks
without unlimited access to electronic versions may be acquired and put on reserve. Exceptions may exist
for English courses for Pathway programs and first year students.
• Duplicate copies barely used materials, new editions that lack substantial changes from previous editions
which are already owned are excluded, as are materials that are out of scope.
Acquisitions Procedures:
Requests for new materials should be submitted by faculty, students, or staff to the appropriate subject librarian
by either submitting a materials request via e-mail to the appropriate subject librarian or by using the purchase
suggestion web form on the library’s website.
Essential information about the requested materials should include:
• Whether the item is needed for reserve or for upcoming assignments and when the material is required by.
• Title, author, edition, year of publication, and publisher as available.
• Desired format if applicable.
• Identifying number (if known), e.g., ISBN, Amazon ASIN, etc.
• URL or a clipped advertisement for the item or the vendor if available.
• Any other identifying information that may be useful.
• Any justifications for the purchase that the requestor wishes to make.
