Buddhism is a way of life as
                                                  much as it is a way of thinking. It
                                                  drove their fearlessness of
                                                  sorrow and hardship. It fuelled
                                                  their self-re ection and
                                                  introspection. It provided insight
                                                  into the world, and became the
                                                  Muse for their writing. While
                                                  self-reliance was key to success, it
                                                  was their fearlessness that
                                                  gained them public
                                                  acknowledgement. These women
                                                  became the harbingers of
                                                  change both amongst the
                                                  previously established ideas of
                                                  Beat poetry, and for the notion
                                                  of equality between men and
                                                  women. Their work may
                                                  eventually transcend time,
                                                  encouraging 'ordinary' people to
                                                  do extraordinary things and to
                                                  think ‘outside the box’ of our
                                                  social norms.
