Buddhism is a way of life as
much as it is a way of thinking. It
drove their fearlessness of
sorrow and hardship. It fuelled
their self-re ection and
introspection. It provided insight
into the world, and became the
Muse for their writing. While
self-reliance was key to success, it
was their fearlessness that
gained them public
acknowledgement. These women
became the harbingers of
change both amongst the
previously established ideas of
Beat poetry, and for the notion
of equality between men and
women. Their work may
eventually transcend time,
encouraging 'ordinary' people to
do extraordinary things and to
think ‘outside the box’ of our
social norms.
