P. 8

Richard began practicing cycling when he was only 15 on an amateur cycling team called “Corage
Carchense” (Carchian Courage). He began to train with former stars of Ecuadorian cycling like Juan
Carlos Rosero and Paul Caicedo. Later, in 2010, he won his first major championship when he came first

at The National Junior Road Championship. He was also first in some other international races like
“Vuelta de la Juventud de Colombia”, “Vuelta a Navarro”, and “Vuelta a Asturias”.

His performance captivated European teams, and in 2016, he joined the Lizarte team. Subsequently, in
2017, he had the opportunity to be the first Ecuadorian to compete in the “Vuelta a España” road race. In
May 2018, his name was in the start-list for the 2018 “Giro d'Italia”. He won stage 8 of the race, becoming
the first Ecuadorian cyclist to win a stage in a Grand Tour. In June 2019, he won the 2019 “Giro d'Italia”,

also winning two stages during the race.

Despite being considered a hero in his country, Carapaz is a humble man who believes that everything is
possible if you don´t give up on your dreams. “In my country, there was not enough support for cycling to
be able to reach a world level; so, I was forced to leave the country in search of a dream that at that time,
               was almost impossible to fulfill.”
