MSDS TERMS
Section 1: Product Identification and Use
1. Product Identifier: This is to be exactly the same as on the label. The name can refer
to the common name, chemical name, trade name, brand name, generic name, code
name, or code specified by the supplier.
2. Product Identification Number: This 4-digit number is used as a reference for the
shipper and receiver during the transportation of the product.
3. Product Use: This is an important piece of information for the worksite that specifies
the product use(s) as intended by the supplier. Use other than those intended may pose
a risk to workers.
For example
a solvent meant for use in degreasing tanks may pose a significant health
or explosion risk to workers if used as a manual cleaning agent,
because it may easily evaporate into air.
4. Manufacturer Identifier: Name, address, and emergency telephone number.
5. Supplier Identifier: Name, address, and emergency telephone number.
Section 2: Hazardous Ingredients
1. Chemical Identify and Concentration of Ingredients: This will list each hazardous
ingredient in the controlled product, and its percentage.
2. LD50 of the Ingredients: This is a measure of the “acute lethality” of the material. Test
animals are administered a single dose of the ingredient (based on their weight) by a
specific route (normally ingestion or skin contact). The dose that kills 50% of the test
animals is called the LD50 – Lethal Dose 50%. The lower the LD50, the more toxic the
ingredient.
For example
LD50 could read: Rat: Oral LD50: 200 mg/kg.
This means that if 10 rats were fed 200 mg of the ingredient,
for every kilogram of body weight, 5 of the 10 rats would have died.
(If it weighed 500 g, it would have been given 100 mg of material,
if it weighed 250 g, it would have been given 50 mg).
3. LC50 of the Ingredients: This is similar to LD50, but it is the concentration in air that the
test animals were exposed to, over a set period of time (usually 4 hours). LC50 is
expressed as ppm – parts of ingredient per million parts air, or mg/m3 – milligrams of
ingredient per cubic metre of air.
For example
LD50 could read: Guinea pig: LC50: 1500 ppm – 4 hours.
