7. Substantive and/or formal theory outlined in the final report takes into account all the
variations in the data and conditions associated with these variations. The report is
analytical rather than purely descriptive. Theory development is the goal. (Glaser &

Describing the CC Experience (Initial Impression of the Metasphere)
During the community conversation meetings, attendees typically sign-in and make a name
tag. They may be greeted by the host or a volunteer. If not assigned to a particular table (number
on the name tag) guests may take a seat anywhere (some CCs just have one main circle). Usually,
there will be some refreshments (snack food and soft drinks or juice) that participants can help
themselves to and if you arrive early enough there is ample time for networking and milling
around. There may be a notepaper or a survey to fill out first.
The primary role of the facilitator is to understand differences between community
members and make the discussions free flowing. As a facilitator, you would attempt to accomplish
two major tasks described next:
Task 1: Pre-conversation Stage – as guest participants get comfortable you might announce the
start time.
1. Introduce the general concept and objectives of the community conversation to the group
and go over any ‘ground rules’ or agreements. Be sure to ask for their feedback, ideas and
support.
2. Collaborate and check-in with any VIP guests or speakers, community leaders and
concerned interests before starting (Ideally you would have worked with them weeks
