Abstract
This paper explores the potential of societal change and expanding deliberative democracy
research utilizing proactive participatory stakeholder dialogue, using empirical material from
gatherings called “Community Conversations” currently trending across America. In addition, the
author researches historical contexts of civic engagement and explores firsthand the experience
of facilitation and participant exchange focusing on the relationship dynamics of conflict and
resolution aspects that are found within these group processes. The experience of dialogues that
the author participated in were considered of which a four-part series in Albany New York is
studied. This research identified and analyzed functions (key processes) needed for the effort of
Community Conversations to succeed. Using the functions as a heuristic to analyze and present
this material, this paper shows combining evolving input approaches can result in group process
exchanges that are richer and deeper in their comprehension and ability to deal with a multitude
of social issues that these dialogue groups often take on. Where innovative group processes and
research have yet to venture with no literature found that has inquired to this depth, the author
sought to go further deeper into dimensions of self-projection that contrasts community creation
against group dynamics where meaningful exchange of ideas can lead to structural innovation,
neighborhood improvement and citizen empowerment reaching into a realm where the dialogue
itself contributes to a better understanding of these. In contrast to systems research where the
researcher defines system boundaries, the dialogue allowed system boundaries to be defined along
the process in a bottom-up manner. This resulted in different ideas about how to approach and
deal with future challenges and opportunities. Furthermore, the functions of Community
Conversations (in conclusion) serve as useful practices in creating positive sustainable options
when group input is valued and best practices adopted it represents hope for aligned humanity.
