Exercise and Discuss:

Reverse brainstorming helps you solve problems and think of even more creative ideas.
Instead of asking, ‘How do I solve or prevent this problem?’ ask, ‘How could I possibly
cause the problem?’

You can also ask ‘How could I possibly achieve the opposite effect?’

That may seem strange and silly at first, especially when you feel your mind cannot think
of one single idea. You can find out for yourself if you try the exercise below. Here is an
example to get you started.

Task: Write the best essay for English homework.

Ask the question: How do I write the best essay for English homework?

Then reverse the problem statement—

How do I write the worst possible essay for English homework?

Examples of ‘reverse’ ideas:
• Write the essay without reading the chapter.

• Write the essay without doing any research.

• Leave out quotes that the facilitator said would get me extra marks.
• Give the homework one day late to get minus five points.

• Do not read over the homework for mistakes and corrections.
