UP AND AWARE - 8
What are some of the things from your list that you did not have the
freedom to do when you were five years old?
What has changed since you were five years of age, to have this
freedom? Is it just your age?
When you hear the lists of other learners, how do you feel? Circle one of
the statements below.
• I feel that I enjoy about the same amount of freedom
as other learners. (1)
• I feel that I enjoy more freedom than other learners. (2)
• I feel that I have far less freedom compared to other learners. (3)
Look at your list again and rate each freedom you have written with a
ranking of 1, 2 or 3 as shown above.
Exercise and Discuss:
Form random groups of six learners and compare your lists with your group. Discuss, one
by one, the freedom you have rated, starting with 1.
For the freedoms you have rated 2 and 3, ask and share what you think maybe the reasons
for having or not having those freedoms. For example, you may be allowed to ride your
bicycle to the market because the neighbourhood you live in is a safe one. Or, you may not
be allowed to watch films with your friends because you had once told a lie to your parents
and now you are working towards building their trust again.
Write down the reasons you consider to be the most important for all three ratings.
Share with the class.
