UP AND AWARE - 8
3. Listen with care to others ideas while working on the task.
4. Help others learn.
5. Participate and encourage others to participate.
6. Show respect to others.
7. Work quietly so others can work too.
These are the pillars for learning collaborative and cooperative skills.
Group size for tasks in this chapter should not exceed four learners. Ensure that learners do not work
with friends only. Form heterogeneous groups.
Exercise and Discuss (on page 40):
This exercise is a warm-up done with limitations on learners' verbal exchange (they can only describe the
colours in their picture) and one that will allow learners to appreciate the power of verbal communication
for the next exercise.
Pre-plan this exercise by counting the number of groups beforehand (four learners in a group).
From any one magazine, pick full page pictures (sceneries, buildings, but not advertisements) and cut
each into four equal parts (one picture per four groups). You must have one quarter for each group.
Shuffle the quarters and distribute them randomly.
Exercise and Discuss (on page 41):
This exercise is an introduction to a collaborative effort through which learners will understand the
importance of precious time and the critical contribution of each member in the task. They will understand
how each member of the group must do his/her bit for the group to complete the task.
1. Pick ONE topic PER GROUP for this exercise, for example, a city, film, car, furniture, etc. and
make a note of it. (Each group gets a different topic.)
2. Whisper the topic to each group so that the other groups do not know what the others are
working on.
3. This a timed exercise. Each round lasts only 2 minutes after which the learners must pass on
the sheet.
4. Instruct them to leave space on the sheet for the next group to work on.
5. Go over the instructions with the learners so that they know exactly what to do in each round.
6. Make sure that learners write clearly for the others to read.
Exercise and Discuss (on page 43):
This is an exercise in collaborative writing.
Explain the meaning of genres to learners. A genre in literature is a particular style or form of writing,
for example, mystery, science-fiction, thriller, romantic, fairy tale, play, etc.
A run-up to this exercise can be done a few weeks prior by asking learners to read a book of their choice.
Learners must choose their genre for this exercise.
Fix a time limit for each round: five to seven minutes per round.
