UP AND AWARE - 8

Tell them you will speak out a few situations. If they can relate to the scenario, they can take a step
forward (towards the centre of the circle). Also tell them that even if they relate to the situation they
DO NOT necessarily need to respond by taking a step forward. They can choose to stay where they are
because they can choose to share what they want.
Explain that this is not a competitive activity but rather the one that will allow them to understand the
                  concept at hand.
                  Statements
                  • Take a step if you’ve ever thought badly about yourself like, ‘I’m fat or thin, stupid or ugly.’

                  • Take a step if someone has ever said a mean thing to you like, ‘You are fat or thin, stupid or ugly.’
                  • Take a step if you have ever been teased because of how you look.

                  • Take a step if you have ever been teased about something you have said or done.
                  • Take a step if you believe you are smart.

                  • Take a step if you believe you are kind to others.
                  • Take a step if you feel like no one cares for you or loves you.

                  • Take a step if you are proud of something you have done.
                  • Take a step if you found out that someone has spread rumours about you.

                  • Take a step if you like yourself sometimes or most of the time.
                  • Now sit down in the spot where you are standing.

                  Discuss:
Look around you. What did you learn about others?
What did you learn about yourself even if you didn’t take a step?

What happened to the circle eventually when everyone got closer? Have most of us had similar
                  experiences?
Explain that as the circle becomes tighter, learners are touching/nearly touching shoulders and this is
how respect/disrespect looks when it ‘touches’ us or gets in our space.

Chapter 3: Conflict Resolution (Effective Communication)
                  Beginning (on page 23):

Ask learners to read up the story The Ants and the Grasshopper prior to the class.
Keep a copy of the story handy in case some learners have not read it before the class.

                  Somebody: The grasshopper
                  Want/Wants: A comfortable life

But: It has no food when the winters begin
So: It approaches the ants so that it can survive and learns the lesson that to live comfortably,
                  one has to work hard
