UP AND AWARE - 8
Chapter 6: Gender Equality (Empathy)
Steer discussion towards the impact and agents of socialisation, among them being family, peers, the
media, religious and cultural differences.
Explain how girls and boys are brought up differently by parents. Social and peer groups endorse how
boys will gather to watch and discuss sports and cars while girls will talk about make-up and fashion.
None of these activities are right or wrong and they should not be considered so either.
Exercise and Discuss (on page 49):
Give learners one week to research and prepare for this task. To make this as large a learning experience
for learners as possible, make sure that no two groups choose the same woman icon.
Chapter 10: Celebrating Diversity—Ideas (Critical Thinking)
Exercise and Discuss (on page 74):
Material needed: One clothes hanger (or any other easy to procure object like a book or a plate).
Show and place a clothes hanger for a clear view and ask learners to individually list as many different
possible uses. Learners will do this activity individually and will then share their ideas in their allotted
group. Ask learners to generate as many ideas as possible in their group.
Exercise and Discuss (on page 78):
The exercise on reverse brainstorming may seem challenging for learners at first. Take the learners
through a verbal practice session before they attempt it in their exercise books.
This exercise aims to improve communication while generating ideas.
