UP AND AWARE - 7
Here is a list of people who overcame challenges and did their best for
the welfare of the society.
• Helen Keller turned hearing and visually-impaired when she was less
than two years old. She became the first such person to earn a Bachelor
of Arts degree.
• Beethoven, the great classical music composer, lost his hearing in his
20s but continued to compose music.
• Mahatma Gandhi stirred Indians to defeat the British Empire not with
an army but through non-violence.
• Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai defied the threats of the Taliban
to campaign for the right to education of girls in her country. She was
shot, but survived and then went on to bring the world’s attention to
human rights, women’s rights and the right to education.
Discuss:
All of the above mentioned people had plenty of excuses to do nothing
with their lives. But, they chose to act responsibly by doing all they
could, to be the best person possible.
Do you know someone or have you read about someone who has
managed a stressful life to be the best person he/she could?
What do you think makes some people choose to act responsibly?
Why do you think some people choose to be irresponsible when faced
with difficulties?
‘Responsibility finds a way. Irresponsibility makes excuses!’ —Gene Bedley
