3. At this point, talk about choices that come with freedom and that informed choices can be made from

Chapter 12: Respect for One’s Nation (Interpersonal Relationship)
This chapter aims at making learners think about how they can respect their nation and the people of their
country. To learn to respect a country is a difficult concept for them to grasp. Symbolically, we can teach
them the relevance of our flag and anthem among other things, and thereby instil an abstract concept
as this.
Nonetheless, learners can be taught to respect their nation by breaking down the ideals of our country and
the values we uphold into smaller parts viz. its people.
Learners are now already familiar with the concepts of respect and freedom. This chapter builds on that
learning.
Exercise and Discuss (on page 88):
Learners are most likely to identify the feeling of patriotism and a sense of belongingness towards their
country when they relate to their flag, anthem and the display of both at the time of a victory in sports,
as in the World Cup Cricket series or the Olympics. They are able to move from a limited sense of ‘I’ to
a more encompassing sense of ‘We’.
