UP AND AWARE - 6

                  Exercise (on page 51):
Make a chart (see below) and write down all 11 words on the blackboard, as shown below. Read out each
word and ask learners to raise their hands for describing a girl and a boy respectively.

                               Words Boy Girl
                                 soft
                              powerful
                              intelligent

                  1. Read out each word aloud and count the responses for each word. Write it on the blackboard.
                  2. Have your learners responded in a gender stereotypical manner?

                  3. Explain gender stereotyping as: how we think boys and girls or men and women are supposed to be,
                      act and behave.
                  4. Ask learners how and from where they learnt what ‘gender’ is. Explain that most of our gender
stereotyping is reinforced by verbal and non-verbal cues from parents (how they treat and
behave with the people of the same and opposite gender), society, advertisements, stories, movies,
                      magazines, etc.
                  5. Ask learners if they think that gender stereotyping serves any purpose or helps either gender in
                      any way.

                  6. Ask them if they think that either gender is at a disadvantage because of the stereotyping.
Exercise and Discuss (on page 53):
After the exercise, explain that both men and women, can engage in all the occupations in the list.

Chapter 7: Concern for Environment (Creative Thinking)

You need to execute this chapter in the outdoors as far as possible.

Learners need to perceive their environment through visual, auditory, tactile and olfactory senses to
appreciate and thereby inculcate a sense of respect and concern for nature and their surroundings.

Think About and Discuss (on page 57):
Ask the learners to share their responses.

Ask them what they do with their garbage and where they think it goes. Ask them where they think a
bottle tossed in the river would end up.

Exercise and Discuss (on page 61):
