Rules for Changing Active Voice to Passive Voice
❖ Identify the subject , the verb and the object : S V O
❖ Change the object into subject
❖ Put the suitable helping verb or Auxiliary verb. In case the helping verb was
given, use the same verb but note that the helping verb given agrees with the
object.
❖ Change the verb into the past participle verb.
❖ Add the preposition “by” (Optional)
❖ Change the subject into object.

When and Why do we use passive voice?
1) We want to emphasize the receiver of the action
• President Kennedy was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald
2) We don’t know who did the action (The agent)
• My wallet has been stolen. (Somebody has stolen my wallet)
3) We think the agent is not important interesting
• Our house is being painted. (Company is painting our house)
4) The agent is obvious
• The workers are paid weekly. (The company pays the workers weekly)
5) We are making the general statements or announcements
• Passengers are reminded to fasten their seatbelts.
6) The agent is everyone.
• The emergency services can be called by dialing 999
(The public can call the emergency by dialing 999)
