a. Social Function

Passive Voice is used to emphasize on the action (Verb) and the object of a sentence rather
than the subject of a sentence.
It means that
▪ Action is more important than the subject

For Examples :
➢ The house was built in 1654.

(It means that we interested with the house not who built the house).

➢ The road is being repaired.
(It means that we interested with the road not who repaired the road )

▪ Subject is unknown or don’t want to be stated

For Examples :

➢ I noticed that a window had been left open.
➢ Every year thousands of people are killed on our roads.
➢ All the cookies have been stolen

▪ Even when the subject is known, it is put at the end

For Examples :

➢ A letter is written by me.
➢ America was discovered by Columbus.
➢ The new ideas were suggested by Edo
