Captured: Lesson One
Chapter 1: War Comes to the Philippines

• Introduce the story:
Christmas is many people’s favorite time of the year. What is your favorite time of the year?
What is your favorite holiday?

Show one of your favorite Christmas decorations.
Ask: What kind of decorations do you like to decorate with at Christmas time?

Did you know that other countries have different traditions for their holidays, including Christmas? Some
places are not decorated for Christmas. How would you feel if your home was not decorated for Christmas?

In our story today, we are going to hear about things that happened to a family that moved to another country
as missionaries. In part of the story, you are going to hear about what it might be like to celebrate Christmas
in another country.

While we read the story, you can use your crayons to color the pictures on pages 1-5.

Read Captured Chapter 1
• Something to Think About (review questions):

1. How do children in the Philippines celebrate Christmas? (caroling for coins, colorful lanterns, bamboo stars)

2. Why did Daddy cover the windows at night? (to keep the light hidden from planes flying overhead)

3. What things did the Hess’ do to stay safe? (dig air raid shelter, cover windows, left the city)
4. What fears did the children have? (planes bombing, enemy soldiers finding them, walking in the dark)

• Action Plan (do something):

What are some ways you have seen God protecting you?

• Memory Verse:
Isaiah 41:10 ESV
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you,
I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

• Talk to God:
Thank God for the people he has put in your life to protect you. Thank God that he can be trusted at all times.
