Captured Chapter2: A Home in the Hills
Family Activity Guide ESV ANSWER KEY
In Chapter 2, God used Filipino Christians to help care for the missionary families’ needs. From carrying
supplies on their heads to building new homes and even cooking meals, the villagers treated the missionaries
like family. Arlene shared how they prepared their meals in a nearby shack by building a fire between stones
and setting pots of food on the stones to cook. It almost sounds like they were on a family camping trip.
Have you ever been camping? How is food cooked differently at camp than at home? What is your favorite
camp food?
One food that is common in the Philippines is rice. Arlene and her family ate lots of rice. They may have even
eaten palitaw. Filipino palitaw is small, flat, sweet rice cakes that are boiled and eaten as a snack or dessert.
The name comes from the Tagalog word litaw, which means “to float.” The palitaw float or rise to the surface
of water when they are finished cooking. As a family, try making palitaw together.
• Home Activity: Floating Delights
You will need:
· 2 cups rice flour
· 3/4 to 1 cup of water
· 1 cup grated coconut
· 1/2 cup granulated sugar
· 4 Tbs toasted sesame seeds
Mix sesame seeds and sugar together. Combine rice flour and water to make dough. Roll the dough into 1-
inch balls. Flatten balls into patties. In a pot, boil 8 cups of water on medium-high heat. Place 3 to 4 palitaw
patties in water for 1 to 3 minutes. Remove when they float, and place on a parchment paper-lined baking
sheet. Dip in coconut. Sprinkle with sesame seed sugar mixture. Enjoy the rice cakes warm or let them cool!
Talk about ways that God has taken care of your family during difficult times.
As a family, learn this week’s verse 1 Peter 5:7.
Take the time to thank God for his goodness and how he can be trusted to take care of us.
