Captured Chapter 3: Life in the Hills
Family Activity Guide ESV

In Chapter 3, we read about the Hess family’s life in the hills. From snakes to butterflies, monkeys, and
scorpions, life in the hills included all kinds of animals. In fact, each of the children adopted a chicken as a
pet. What a great reminder that just as a hen takes care of her eggs and her baby chicks, so God takes care
of his children.
Arlene and her family celebrated Christmas by writing each person’s name on a slip of paper then taking turns
drawing a name. They made a present for the person whose name they drew.

What was the last homemade gift you created?

Who did you make the gift for?
How did you feel when the person opened your gift?

Did you ever think about how praying for someone is like giving him/her a gift? When you pray for someone,
not only are you are spending time thinking about that person, but you are also talking to Almighty God about
him/her. How can your prayers help someone?

• Home Activity: Pajama Prayers

After you are in your pajamas and ready for bed, ask your parents if you can have pajama prayers.

First, write every family member’s name on a slip of paper. Then, fold each paper slip in half, and place them
inside a bowl. Take turns drawing a slip of paper and praying for the person whose name is on it. You can use
our sample prayer to get you started. Feel free to ask the people if they have any special prayer requests.

You can keep praying until all of the names are drawn, or you can draw one name a night until everyone in
your family has been given the gift of prayer through the week.

Dear God,

Tonight, I want to pray for name of person on paper. Thank you that you love him/her. Please help
him/her to love you every day. Name of person on paper has a need. She/He needs tell God the request.
Thank you that you will answer his/her request. And thank you that you always hear us when we pray.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
