Captured Chapter 4: Leaving our Jungle Home
Family Activity Guide ESV

In Chapter 4, we read about how the Hess family had to quickly pack their things to leave their home.
Although they did not know where they were going, they knew that they could trust God.

• Home Activity: Pack Your Sack and Have a Snack

Show a backpack/travel bag.

Ask: If our family had to quickly leave our house, and we could only take one bag each, what would you put
inside your bag? What important things could we not live without?

Talk about the items and why they are important to each of you.

Show your backpack then pull out some crackers and some fruit to eat. Share the food with everyone.
Practice saying your memory verse while eating your snack.

In our story, the Hess family had to take their food with them. They carried it on their backs in knapsacks,
which are like cloth backpacks.

We know that if we had to quickly leave our home, God would take care of us too.
Missionaries often leave their homes and travel to another place to tell people about Jesus. Sometimes, they
can only take a few bags with them, which means they must leave many belongings behind.

Let’s take some time to pray for missionary families we know that have left their homes to tell other people
about the love of God.

Dear God, We thank you for our friends that have left their homes to be missionaries for you. We know
that they had to leave many belongings behind to obey your voice. Please give them what they need to
live and even give them some special things that they really want too. Help keep them safe and give
them courage to share your love with others. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

Let’s also pray for the people in our city who have lost everything. Pray that God will show us how we can be
ready to help other people when they are in need.
Dear God, We thank you that our family has a house to live in with plenty of food to eat. But we know
that there are families in our city that are homeless and others that have lost everything because of an
emergency. Help us to always be ready and willing to help those who are in need. Help us love the
people around us who not only need our help but also need to hear about your love. In Jesus’ name we
pray, amen.
