Captured: Lesson Three
Chapter 3: Life in the Hills
• Introduce the story.
What animals do you think make good parents? How have you seen other animals take care of their young?
Show an egg with the word “safe” written on it. Do you think of an egg as being strong? (No, it is fragile. It
breaks easily.) Can an egg protect itself? (No, it needs to be protected.)
What word is written on my egg? (Safe.)
Read Psalm 91:4. In today’s Bible verse we read how God is like a bird that covers its young with its feathers.
Why would a bird need to cover its babies with its feathers? (protection and warmth)
• Activity: SAFE EGGS
Give each child a hard-boiled egg. Write the word “safe” on each egg. Have the children decorate their eggs
using crayons.
Read Captured Chapter 3:
• Something to Think About (review questions)
1. What animals in this chapter were dangerous? (Scorpion in shoe, snake in window, civet cat in chicken
house)
2. How did the Hess family protect the garden? (Lines covered in cloth were pulled from a hut when monkeys
or birds were near)
3. What animal did the children have as pets? (Chickens)
4. What happened to Goldenrod’s first egg? (Arlene had a party with Betty, and they ate it together.)
5. How did they celebrate Christmas in the hills? (Drew names, made gifts for the name they drew.)
• Action Plan (do something):
What can you do to help take care of the animals that visit your yard? Ask your parents for help to make it
happen.
• Memory Verse:
Psalm 91:4 ESV
He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
• Talk to God:
Thank God that just like a bird protects its young, he protects his children.
Thank God that he never falls asleep or stops paying attention when we talk to him.
• What we learned from this chapter…
