Captured: Lesson Four
Chapter 4: Leaving Our Jungle Home

            • Introduce the story:

Let’s pretend we are going on an overnight trip. What would we need to do to get ready for our trip? (pack
clothes, pack food, gas in car, etc.) What would you pack your things inside? (boxes, coolers, suitcases,
        duffel bags, storage bins)

In today’s story, we are going to see what happens when the Hess family gets some unexpected visitors to
        their house in the hills.
While we read today’s chapter, color the picture on page 11 or on any of the previous pages.

        Read Captured Chapter 4.

            • Something to Think About (review questions):

        1. What message did the Johnson brothers share with the missionaries? (Soldiers know where you are; come
             to the city.)

        2. How did God protect the missionaries after they were ordered to Zamboanga City? (He sent rain that
            caused the rivers to overflow.)

        3. What did the Hess family do to get ready to leave their home with the enemy soldiers? (Eat breakfast and
cans of peaches, fill knapsacks, empty mattresses, put extra diapers on baby Victor)
        4. How did Baby Victor get across the log? (A soldier carried him while mama carried his gun.)

        5. What did the family eat before they got on the boats? (Crackers and fruit)

        6. Read Psalm 91:2. In our verse today, David says that the Lord is like a fortress and a refuge. He is One we
can trust. We can trust him at all times—not only during good times but also during hard or sad times.

            • Action Plan (do something):

Because of emergencies, people must often leave their homes with very little time to plan what to take.

You can help someone in need. You could donate some of your things to a family
that has lost everything. Perhaps your family could pray about how you can
help a family that has a great need.

            • Memory Verse:

        Psalm 91:2 ESV
I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

            • Talk to God:

Thank God that he can be trusted in both good times and bad. Thank God that he takes care of his children.
