Captured Chapter 5: In Zamboanga City
                                                 Family Activity Guide ESV

In Chapter 5, we read about how the Hess family had their Bibles taken away from them when they were in
Zamboanga City. How did you feel when you heard that happened?

        Show a Bible.

Ask: Have you ever lost your Bible? What happened? Where did you lose it? Was it ever found?
We know that losing a Bible is not the same as having your Bible stolen but it helps us in a small way to
understand how the Hess family must have felt.

Did you know there are many countries around the world where it is illegal (they are not allowed) to have a
copy of the Bible? The Bible is so precious that people will hide their Bibles and look at it secretly to not get
caught. In other places, people may take the Bible apart and share it page by page, often memorizing the
page they were given since they may never see it again. If they are caught with God’s Word they may be put
into prison or even hurt badly.

Wow! That is hard for us to imagine when we may have more than one Bible in our home.
Let’s take some time to pray for people around the world where they are not allowed to have a Bible. **

        Dear God,

Today we pray for people around the world who must read your Word in secret. Help them to find a
way to hide your word in their hearts. And help them to have the courage to share your love with their
friends and neighbors, even though it is dangerous for them to do so. Help us to also hide your Word in
our hearts and to be willing to share it with others.

In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

            • Memory Verse:

        Psalm 119:11 ESV
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

            • Home Activity: Hidden in Your Heart
Color each heart a different color. Use scissors to carefully cut out the hearts. Give each person in your family
a heart. (There are 6 hearts.) Take turns hiding your heart for others to find. When all the hearts are hidden,
each person looks for a heart that is not their own. Arrange in order all the hearts together to reveal your Bible
verse. Practice saying your Bible verse together as a family.
