Captured Chapter 7: On to Manila
Family Activity Guide ESV

In Chapter 7, we read about many things that happened to the Hess family on the boat while they traveled to
their new home in Manila: saltwater hoses for showers, separation from family, sickness, and surprise care
packages from home.

Missionaries who are far from home sometimes feel that they are forgotten. They can even feel lonely. Living
far away from family and friends can be difficult at times. But, when missionaries receive a card, a letter, an
email, or even a package, this quickly brings a smile to their faces. It reminds them that even though they may
have been away from home for a long time, they are not forgotten.

Let’s pray for our missionary friends who are far from home. Let’s pray that God will help them when they feel
lonely, and that God will do something special to remind them that they are loved.

Dear God,

We thank you for our missionary friends who are far away from home serving you. We have learned
that they can sometimes feel lonely. Please do something special to remind them that they are loved
and not forgotten. Let us know what we can do to help too.

In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

• Home Activity: Sending Love from Home

Arlene and her family were surprised to receive packages from their friends and family at home. The care
packages were filled with clothes, toys, food, and other items for each person in the family. God used these
packages to encourage the Hess family.

This week let’s think about what we can do to encourage our missionary friends who are living far from home.

You could write a letter, send an email, make a video, draw a funny card, or even put together a big box of
surprises for the missionary family. Now that you have some ideas, plan as a family what you want to do, then
make it happen!

You might even want to work together with another family who is also reading Captured.
