Captured: Lesson Nine
                                                  Chapter 9: Free at Last!

            • Introduce the story:

Have you ever had to wait a long time for something? Maybe you were waiting for someone to pick you up.
Perhaps you were waiting for a special day to arrive so you could go somewhere, see someone, or do
        something special.

What did you do while you were waiting? (Count the days, call friend on the phone, pass the time, etc.)
When the waiting was finally over, how did you feel? (Relieved, joyful, etc.)
In today’s story, the Hess family is waiting for the American army to come and rescue them from the prison
camp in the Philippines. It has been almost three years of living as prisoners and moving from place to place
as they dealt with hunger, sickness, and waiting to be set free.

While we read today’s chapter, you can color page 18, the map, and any of the previous pages.
            Read Captured Chapter 9.

            • Something to Think About (review questions):

        1. What exciting news did Arlene learn when she woke up? (The guards were gone.)

        2. How did the Hess family celebrate their freedom? (Raised flags, sang anthems, gathered food and clothing)
        3. What did the Hess family do with their food in case the guards returned? (Hid the rice)

        4. What unusual thing did they see in sky? (Airplanes dropping parachutes)

        5. What did they have to do with the palay (puh-lie) before cooking it? (Get the husk off)

        6. What unexpected surprise did Arlene find in her stew at the army camp? (Peas and carrots)
        7. What three things were inside Mother’s bag? (Bible, Daddy’s diary, medicine)

            • Action Plan (do something):

This week, put together a food care package for those who are in need. Get some bottled water, peanut
butter crackers, raisins, granola bars, and other foods that don’t require cooking or a can opener. Put them in
a box or a storage bag along with a Gospel tract and a handwritten note of encouragement. Keep the
package in your family’s car and be ready to give it to someone in need, with your parents’ permission.

            • Memory Verse:
        Song of Solomon 2:4 ESV
He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.

            • Talk to God:

Thank you, God, for providing our daily needs and covering us with your love. Thank you for sending
Jesus to die for our sins so we can be free from the punishment of sin. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
