Captured Chapter 9: Free at Last!
Family Activity Guide ESV
In Chapter 9, we read about how the Hess family finally gained their freedom after three and a half years of
hiding and captivity. We saw how they always had to trust God to provide their needs, whether that was food,
health, or safety.
Just like you trust your parents to take care of your needs, missionaries totally rely upon God to provide for
their needs. They show faith as they believe that God will give them everything they need. One way God
provides for their needs is by having people support the missionary by sending money every month. This
money is used for buying food, purchasing clothing, and paying bills. Without people being obedient to God
and supporting missionaries, the missionaries would feel alone and forgotten. Let’s take some time to pray
that God will provide the needed financial support for your missionary friends. Pray that God will take care of
their needs, and that people will obediently give to God to help the missionaries.
Dear God,
Thank you for (name of missionary or missionary family). Thank you that they are being obedient by
serving you in (name of place they serve God). Please take care of their needs by providing the
financial support they need. Put it on the hearts of people they know to give to you so you can provide
for the (name of missionary or missionary family). Show us what we can do to help too. In Jesus’ name
we pray, amen.
• Memory Verse:
In today’s Bible verse, we read about how God takes of our needs.
He gives us food, and, most importantly, he covers us with his love
Song of Solomon 2:4 ESV
He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.
• Home Activity: A Place(mat) of Thanks
Chapter 9 talked a lot about food. Food was very important to the Hess family and the other prisoners. One
thing we learned from this chapter is how thankful everyone was to God for providing for their food needs,
even if it was simple rice.
This week, grab a large sheet of paper and make a Thankful Placemat. Start by writing (or having an adult
write) this week’s verse in the center of the placemat. Next, draw pictures of things that you are grateful for.
Take turns sharing with your family members what you drew, then spend some time in prayer thanking God
for all the things you are most grateful for. Finally, practice saying your verse as a family.
