Captured Chapter 8: Los Baños, Here We Come
Family Activity Guide ESV
In Chapter 8, we read of the hard times the Hess family faced when they moved to their new home in Los
Baños. Food shortages, sickness, and hunger were just a few things they endured. But God was with them
and gave them good ideas to encourage them and give them hope that one day they would be rescued.
Like the Hess family discovered, sometimes missionaries serving in poor countries may have a hard time
finding good food to eat. Markets may close because there is not enough food. Stores close when it is too
dangerous for people to leave their homes. Other times, the only food available may already be expired or
even rotten.
But God promises to take care of his children when they help take care of others. One way to help take care
of others is found in our memory verse—by bearing one another’s burdens.
Arlene and her brothers did this when helped carry the load of chores when Daddy was in the hospital and
Mother was feeling sick. They were physically helping share the work.
Another way we can bear the burdens of others is through prayer. Let’s pray for our missionary friends who
sometimes cannot easily get food. Let’s pray that God will help them stay healthy and find food to feed their
family.
Dear God,
Thank you for your promise to take care of your children by providing for our needs. Today, we want to
pray for our missionary friends who live far away. We know that sometimes they cannot easily buy
food. We ask for you to provide the food they need to feed their family. Please help them get good food
that will help them stay healthy. Thank you that you hear us when we pray and that even now you are
sending help to our missionary friends.
In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
• Memory Verse:
In today’s Bible verse, we read about how amazing it is that we can share our burdens
and handle them together. How great to know that we do not have to carry things alone!
Galatians 6:2 ESV
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
• Home Activity: Planting Seeds of Kindness
When the Hess family arrived in their new camp, one of the first things they did was plant flowers and some
vegetables. The vegetable garden was helpful when the food lines were serving less food.
Arlene’s father and her brother Hudson planted beans to help the family have enough food at their new home.
Mother also planted colorful flowers to help their place look brighter.
This week, as a family, plant some seeds. You can choose to plant flowers or vegetables. As you plant each
seed, practice saying your memory verse.
When your flowers or vegetables are fully grown, you can share them with someone who needs
encouragement. Maybe God will use your seeds to grow hope as you share kindness with someone who
needs to be reminded that they are loved and not forgotten.
