Captured Chapter 6: The Happy Life Blues
Family Activity Guide ESV
In Chapter 6, we read about the many unusual places the Hess family had to sleep while spending almost a
year in Davao City, Philippines. From sleeping in the middle of a dance hall, to a mezzanine balcony, and
finally in their own shared home covered in palm fronds, the Hess family learned that God would watch over
them even when they slept as prisoners.
Missionaries must often sleep in strange places. They may sleep in an open-air cement block house, a house
made of dried mud and sticks, or even under the stars. But no matter where they sleep, they too know that
they can trust God to take care of them, even if they are thousands of miles away from their home.
Dear God,
Today we pray for missionaries that are sleeping away from home. Help them to get good rest so they
will be ready to do the work you have for them to do. And help our family to get a good night sleep too.
In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
• Memory Verse:
Psalm 4:8 ESV
In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
• Home Activity: Prayer Sandals
In our story, Arlene made a special pair of sandals for baby Victor. This was one way they protected his feet,
and also helped the family feel at home. This week you are making your own paper prayer sandals.
You will need: cardboard, tape, crayons/markers, scissors, and piece of yarn, pencil
1. Draw the shape of a sandal big enough for your foot on a box or piece of cardboard. Use the image
below to give you an idea.
2. Using crayons or markers color your sandals to make them look nice.
3. Carefully cut out the sandals with scissors.
4. With a pencil, poke three holes in the shape of a V to make a place to tie your yarn straps.
5. Tape a piece of yarn to each sandal to make straps.
6. Practice your verse by putting on your sandals and taking them off.
You could even write your verse on the sandals to help you
learn your verse faster.
