Captured: Lesson Six
Chapter 6: The Happy Life Blues

            • Introduce the story:

Have you ever had to fall asleep in a strange place? Where was it? How did you feel? Did you feel safe?

In today’s story, we are going to hear about the unusual places the Hess children had to sleep as prisoners of
        war in the Philippines.

While we read today’s chapter, you can color the picture on page 13 and any of the previous pages.

        Read Captured Chapter 6.

            • Something to Think About (review questions)
        1. What unusual place did the Hess family first have to sleep at Happy Life Blues? (Middle of the dance floor)

        2. What special things did Daddy make for the Hess family? (Double bed, bunk beds, table, chair, highchair
            for baby Victor)
        3. What jobs did the Hess children have while at Happy Life Blues? (Weave palm fronds for wall and roof,
holding a place in the food line, shelling peanuts for peanut butter)

        4. What special gift did Arlene make for baby Victor? (Pair of sandals from coconut tree fiber)

        5. What rumor was spreading around the camp before Christmas? (Everyone moving on ships to a new camp
             in Manila)
Read Psalm 4:8. When David was hiding from Saul he had to often sleep in new places. But one thing David
knew is that he could sleep peacefully because God would protect him and keep him safe even when he was
        sleeping.
            • Action Plan (do something)

This week, before you go to bed, take some time to pray for the homeless families in your town. Many times,
they must sleep in unusual places. They may or may not have blankets or even pillows. And when there are
colder nights, it can be especially difficult to keep warm. Pray that God will take care of them and help keep
        them safe,

            • Memory Verse:

        Psalm 4:8 ESV
In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord,
        make me dwell in safety.

            • Talk to God:

Thank you, God, that you are always watching over your children, even when we sleep. Thank you that

we do not have to be afraid when we lie down at night, because you will keep us safe. Amen.
