RECOMMENDATION 5.
CONDUCT A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF HOW WELL OTHER SPORTS CURATE THEIR
HISTORY
Recommendation 5 is in response to feedback received on page 32 - WHO IS TELLING ITS STORY WELL?
It is recommended that Football Victoria conduct a thorough study of sporting and non-sporting organisations in Australia
and internationally who curate their history in an exceptional way.
RECOMMENDATION 6.
ACTIVELY EDUCATE FOOTBALL VICTORIA STAFF ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE GAME
Recommendation 6 is in response to feedback received on page 24 - LOOKING AT OUR PAST TO PROVIDE A VISION FOR
OUR FUTURE.
It is recommended that Football Victoria staff participate in an annual online educational seminar or group workshop
about the history of the game, and how what they learn can be used as part of their strategic planning for the game in
their day to day work. In addition, guest speakers and lunchtime workshops on the history of the game should be regularly
scheduled, and Victorian football milestones widely promoted through staff channels. As part of their induction new staff
should be required to complete an online course about the history of Victorian football.
RECOMMENDATION 7.
PROMOTE FOOTBALL’S UNIQUE LINK TO THE HISTORY OF THE STATE OF VICTORIA TO
PROSPECTIVE PARTNERS
Recommendation 7 is in response to feedback received on page 22 -THE IMPORTANCE OF TELLING OUR STORY and page
36 - WHO SHOULD WE PARTNER IN TELLING OUR STORY?
It is recommended that Football Victoria create new joint venture funding relationships with non-sporting bodies in the
multicultural, education, local and state government sectors, and historical associations, who share common stories,
priorities and strategic direction.
RECOMMENDATION 8.
USE OUR HISTORY TO BUILD A STRONGER COMMUNITY CULTURE IN CLUBLAND
Recommendation 8 is in response to feedback received on page 22 -THE IMPORTANCE OF TELLING OUR STORY.
It is recommended that Football Victoria educate clubs at all levels of the game in how they can use their cultural roots
and history to become a vibrant hub for families in their community, in the post-NCIP era. Education programs that
promote and embrace values on which the game was built, such as unity, friendship, equality, pride and respect, would be
the cornerstone of the professional development offered to clubs by Football Victoria.
RECOMMENDATION 9.
ENSURE THAT THE HISTORICAL COMMITTEE COMMITS TO A WHOLE-OF-HISTORY
APPROACH TO TELLING OUR STORY
Recommendation 9 is in response to feedback received on page 28 - A COMMITMENT TO TELLING OUR WHOLE STORY.
It is recommended that Football Victoria ensure that, as part of its collective responsibility, the historical committee
addresses, where possible, each era of Victorian football history equally.
RECOMMENDATION 10.
USE OUR HISTORY TO PROVIDE INSPIRATION AND BUILD ASPIRATION IN YOUNG PEOPLE
Recommendation 10 is in response to feedback received on page 22 -THE IMPORTANCE OF TELLING OUR STORY.
It is recommended that as part of its annual club and player registration process, Football Victoria provide each
participating player with a digital or hard copy footballers’ diary (or similar document) branded with the words, values,
stories and health messages from the greats of Victorian football. Periodically the diary would come to life with live
stream media showcasing the pioneers of the game involved in this project.
