LOOKING AT OUR PAST TO PROVIDE A VISION FOR OUR FUTURE
Knowing and celebrating the history of our game is a wonderful way of strengthening and unifying the diverse groups who
have been impacted by the sport over generations. It is important to ascertain though, whether the history of the game can
also have current relevance to the strategic commercial and operational vision for Victorian football.
Respondents were given the opportunity to select any or all the options provided, or submit their own ideas and
comments about the question...
In what ways can the history of our game enhance our strategic planning for the future?
The data shows that over 60% of respondents believe that the history of the game provides strong evidence on which
decisions about the future of the game can be made, can inspire and motivate current and future leaders responsible for
executing strategic plans, and provide a platform to drive the game’s commercial potential.
17 of the respondents also provided additional comments to support their thoughts.
A number of respondents stated that past experiences, successes and failures provide an important learning tool for those
charged with seeing that the game’s commercial and strategic vision becomes reality.
Many stated that keeping our history relevant provides a platform for all football advocates, and using the knowledge of
our pioneers should be an important part of the process.
The following outlines the percentage of respondents who selected each option.
(a) The history of the game provides many learnings that can be used in future decision-making 66.67%
(b) Honouring the pioneers of football and celebrating past events provides wisdom, guidance, motivation and 62.96%
inspiration to current and future custodians of the game.
(c) Knowing the history of the game provide a strong platform on which to unify the game and maximise its 61.73%
commercial potential.
