THE REPORT

The following is a detailed report and summary of data on which the review recommendations were based.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TELLING OUR STORY

The purpose of adopting a whole of game approach to this review was to create a shared vision with a clear understanding
about why it is important to preserve, tell and celebrate our story well.
Respondents were given the opportunity to select any or all the options provided, or submit their own ideas and com-
             ments on the question...

Why it is important to educate past, present and future generations about the history of Victorian football?

The data shows that over half the respondents believe that its important to educate others about our football history
because it is linked to the history of the state of Victoria, it provides strong evidence for making future decisions about
our game, promotes and models community and social values, and supports the physical, social and mental wellbeing of
             young people.

25 of the respondents also provided additional comments to support their thoughts.

In their comments many respondents believed that if you do not know or understand your history you are doomed to
repeat mistakes made in the past. You also fail to acknowledge past successes and how the building blocks to success
can be applied to current thinking.

Many believed that knowing your history strengthens the game by unifying people from diverse backgrounds. Its also
provides a sense of belonging and a mechanism for re-engagement for the generations who have been lost to the game.

‘If you don’t respect your history you don’t respect your family’ was a powerful statement made by one survey respondent.
Poignantly this response holds true to the core value of RESPECT for the game upheld by Football Victoria, and perhaps
best summaries why its important we educate future generations about the history of the game.
The following outlines the percentage of respondents who selected each option.

             (a) The history of football is linked closely to the social, demographic and cultural history of Victoria. 60.49%
