The Bodegas Valdemar winery was established in Rioja in 1985, however the family
winemaking history dates back to 1889 when Joaquin Martínez Bujanda established a
winery. Today it is still owned and run by two generations of the founding family.
Unusually for Rioja, all the grapes used by Bodegas Valdemar come from their own
estate vineyards (290 hectares of them), across the three sub-regions of Rioja, giving
unrivalled control over the quality of the fruit at every level. The range consists of
unoaked entry-level Riojas bursting with flavour, to the classic styles of Crianza, Reserva
and Gran Reserva.
The winery has historically been renowned as innovative, (Valdemar was the first winery
in Rioja to introduce the saignée method for the producing Rosado) and more recently
have continued to pioneer through experimentation with the re-introduction of
indigenous varieties such Maturana.
More recently, the winery has established a winery in Ribera del Duero.
Bodegas Valdemar is still very much a family
business. The fifth generation, Jesus (III) and
Ana Martinez Bujanda, now manage the
winery, following on from their father Jesus
(II) who built the Conde Valdemar winery in
the 1980’s.
The latest generation have continued
to pioneer, through the development
of Inspriación with indigenous varietals
and Fincas Valdemar, a new project in
Ribera del Duero.
