Since 1700, Vergelegen (meaning “situated far away”), has been home to some of the world’s great explorers and
visionaries, who each in their own way have helped shape Vergelegen to what it is today: a world-class Estate.
Vergelegen is renowned for producing elegant, handcrafted wines and has a widely respected reputation for
environmental and sustainable practices.
The climate at Vergelegen is mild due to its close proximity to the chilly Atlantic Ocean at False Bay - around six
kilometres away. Vineyards range in altitude between 140 and 310m above sea level with slopes facing north to north-
west, and south to south-east. In the Southern Hemisphere, the latter comprise the coolest sites. 21 different soil types,
including some that have been identified as being amongst the most ancient viticultural soil types in the world.

Situated in Somerset West at the slopes of the Hottentots Holland
mountain range overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
The estate extends over 3000 hectares and Vineyards make up a total of
148 hectares
Vergelegen translates as 'situated far away' as at the time, it was two-day
wagon ride from Cape Town
Vergelegen is one of the oldest in south Africa. Established in 1700 by
Adrian van set Stel, Governor of the Dutch colony and in 1987 it was
purchased by Anglo American.
All of Vergelegen wines are made with grapes from the estate vineyards.
Production of its first wine was in 1992, Vergelegen Estate and its wines
have earned more than 200 accolades, including the coveted Chateau
Pichon Longueville Trophy for the Best Bordeaux blend at the
International Wine & Spirits Competition.
Andre Van Rensburg (photo - above right), winemaker for 18 years at Vergelegen, believes it is the single most beautiful
wine estate in the world and they strive to produce wines that will truly reflect its unique terroir.
