School context

At Mondeor high school, there is a culture of respect, collaboration and acceptance

which are nurtured by the teachers through their connection to learners as human

beings. Teachers at Mondeor high have a passion for their work and this has become
the part of the school's image. A good reputation rubs off onto the learners who

understand that they have a reputation to uphold which is inline with the name of the

institution and that builds on the learner’s self esteem and makes them feel valued.
Most the learners come from the suburbs and they are from middle class families. The

school has learners from all races and the learners are diverse from religions, cultures,
languages, ethnic backgrounds etc. The school is well resourced and tries it best to give

the learners the best support for development it can. The school has a library, science

laboratories, sports fields and court and a variety of extra murals. The school is
governed by very strict rules and misbehavior is not taken lightly, for example if learners

are involved in a fight they are suspended immediately or if they do not do their
homework or assignments the learners are either given detention or marks are

deducted for late submission. The learners are also detained for coming late to school

or to class. The message the school sends is that misbehavior will not be tolerated or
taken lights. The school offer at creative arts, geography, isizulu, afrikaans, history, life

sciences, physical sciences, business studies, consumer studies. The school does not

offer computer studies as a subject and that disadvantages the learner because they
only get to use computersat home if they have them. The subjects are taught by good

and dedicated teachers but they have not been updated (the curriculum) and they do not

align with the basic requirements for the 4yh industrial revolution which means that the
learners are being equipped with important knowledge, skills and values but as well as

outdated knowledge, skills and values that may not adapt with the change that is

happening in the world. The learners are very talented and unique in their different
strands. The school does an annual art exhibition to showcase the artwork of the

learners and this is done to encourage learners to love their work and constantly work at

bettering their art. The learners do get rebellious sometimes but I think it is to escape

                                                                                                             4
