Dear Mr. Welters and Ambassador Welters,
Morehouse School of Medicine has developed an esteemed reputation for educating and graduating the
healthcare leaders the world needs most — those committed to primary care, and to serving under-resourced
communities. A mission that continues to advance as we partner with other powerful organizations
dedicated to health equity, such as CommonSpirit Health.
Morehouse School of Medicine and CommonSpirit Health has forged a historic alliance called More in
Common. This trailblazing alliance seeks to remove the barriers that exist in so many of our vulnerable
communities and address the underrepresentation that continues to create health disparities across the
country. We have already started by educating more Black and other underrepresented clinicians.
Cultural competency makes a difference. When patients have “more in common” with their provider, that
shared lived experience leads to increased trust, better engagement, more compliance with healthcare
recommendations and, ultimately, better health outcomes. Although the More in Common Alliance is an
excellent start in the fight for health equity, we cannot further this cause alone. We need advocates like you
to help minimize the cost barriers our students face, empowering us to educate more underrepresented
healthcare providers and improve the health outcomes for under-resourced communities.
Your family has graciously expanded educational opportunities for countless lives. As you take this proposal
into careful consideration, it is my hope that you consider partnering with MSM as we do the same.
Thank you for your time and thoughtfulness- I look forward to being in touch with you soon.
Best Wishes,
Valerie Montgomery Rice, M.D.
