Question tags


             A question tag is a short question that we can add to the end
             of a statement.We form it likethis: auxiliary verb + subject.
             John's funny, isn't he?

             The subject inthe tag is the same as the subject in the statement.
             You workedyesterday,didn'tyou?

             A negative statement has a positivetag. A positive statement
             hasa negative tag.
             Edwardcan walk to the farm, can'the?         Itisn't easy, isit?
             Sentences with the present simple or the past simple have do,

             does or did inthe tag.
             Antony likespainting, doesn'the?       You don't haveany cousins, do you?
             Debbiepassedherexam, didn'tshe?

             Sentences with an auxiliary verb have the same auxiliary verb
             inthe tag.
             We'llsee the newbaby, won't we?        They can't leavenow,can they?
             Weshouldn'tsayanything,shouldwe?

             Some structures have different tags.

              Structure      Auxiliary

              used to        did          You used to live here,didn't you?

              1 am           aren't       I'm late, aren't 1?
              Let's          shall        Let'sstop, shall we?


              have got        have        You've got a bike, haven't you?                                       UlA/lA/  tsn/t he?

              Imperative     will          Don'ttell him,will you?

             When the subject inthe sentence is this or that,the subject in the tag is it.
             That was fun, wasn't it?

             When the subject inthe sentence is these or those,the subject in the tag isthey.
             These areyour pens,aren't they?

             We use question tags with rising intonation when we want to check informationthat we aren't sure about.

             Pandas come from China, don't they?        Your dad's an engineer, isn'the?

             We use question tags with falling intonation when we are sure of the answer and we expect the
             listener to agree with us.


             It'scoldtoday, isn't it?   You won't forget tophone,willyou?
