The Blantyre 42.195-kilometre race was introduced in the early 90s and was being organized
under the name “NICO BLANTYRE CITY MARATHON” after its initial sponsor and
the competition run up to 2006. In 2018, Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) reintro-
duced the competition under the Name “BLANTYRE MARATHON” with the aim of
promoting long distance running and the sport code of athletics in Malawi.
The competition has seen over 243 marathoners competing over the 3-year period since
MNCS started hosting the event. Henry Moyo is the record holder in the competition after he
ran the race in 2:18:18 in 2002. Additional sporting activities such as aerobics, fun run and relay
races were added to the competition to add variety, increase participation, create fun among
the participants as well as to act as a recreation factor.

The 2022 Blantyre race was supported by a number of companies, some of which had
supported the race before while others supported the race for the first time.
TWO DAYS
SPORTS INDABA
The Ministry of Youth and Sports, together
with MNCS, organized a two-day sports
indaba at the Bingu International Conven-
tion Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe from 15
to16 October 2022.
The Indaba was organized to discuss critical
issues that are hindering the growth of
sports in the country and to strategize on
how as a country, can move forward as far
as sports development is concerned.
The Indaba was held under the theme
‘Sport, A Collaborative E ort’ and
was attended by di erent stakeholders
including the Minister of Youth and Sports
