MITCHELL - -
          HOUSE MASTER: Mr. Kingsbury.
          HOUSE MISTRESS: Miss McClanachan.
HOUSE CAPTAINS: Alan Lentz; Margaret Gilbert.
THE reshuffle of houses this year has given Mitchell a number of promising
athletes. However, we have not been able to win any of the inter-house
competitions that, have already been finalized. It can be said that this was
          not from lack of effort.
Although Mitchell came fourth in the swimming carnival, three Mitchell
swimmers were the champions of their respective age groups. They were Peter
Martin in the boys, and Pam and Beverly Clarke in the girls. We were
unfortunate in that one of our leading open swimmers, Ken Ede, had the
misfortune to break some bones in his hand, and was thus eliminated from
          the carnival.
With one match still to be played. Mitchell house is still unbeaten in
the inter-house cricket. This result has been brought about by the excellent
efforts of Colin Ament and Rodney Close, and of course they were well sup
ported by the other members of the team. Alan Lentz as well as Colin and
Rodney were members of the “A” grade team and Alan also played in the
Combined Secondary Schools team. Mitchell was also well represented in
the “B” and “C” grade teams.
Although there were no inter-house tennis fixtures, Mitchell house was
well represented in the school teams. Three boys from Mitchell house, Malcolm
Bunney, Ray Hargreaves, and John Roulston were members of the “A"
grade School team. Mitchell girls were also prominent in the girl’s inter
school tennis. Lyn Tovey and Dianne Hargreaves were memners of the “A”
grade team and Margaret Lawler and Patsy Coe were our representatives in
          the "B” grade team.
In the inter-house football we found ourselves up against teams con
taining more experienced players. Although we were beaten in all games,
our match against Oxley was very close. The most prominent players were
Brian Boran, John Pile. Noel Gallagher and Alan Rustichelli. These players
and others from Mitchell house played in the school teams, and Brian, John,
and Noel gave particularly good accounts of themselves.
Several Mitchell girls represented the school in the G.P.S. Carnival.
They were P. Clarke, L. Tonkins. Y. Beaumont, and E. Phillips.
               J. Fleming. E. Clarke, T. Chuikoff, S. Gartside, and E. Phillips were
in the school basketball team, while G. Mitchell, J. Curtis, L. Bell, and B.
Clarke played in primary school basketball.
The Athletics Carnival once again found us in the rear of the field.
However quite a few members of Mitchell House put in some good efforts.
Lynette Tonkins and Yvonne Beaumont were the under 15 and under 14
champions respectively and must be congratulated on their efforts, and wo
offer our thanks to Miss Hawkins for training them. We also congratulate
Peter Martin on his almost Queensland record time in the hurdles. Mitchell
made it a double when Alan Lentz won the open hurdles. In spite of coming
last we had a very enjoyable carnival.
Our effort in the cross-country was disappointing but Noel Gallagher
and Peter Lucas ran well to be twelfth and thirteenth respectively and they
          were our best runners.
In conclusion we thank Mr. Kingsbury and Miss McClanachan for
          their help during the year.

THOMAS MITCHELL, Surveyor-General of N.S.W., explored
in detail the N.S.W. tributaries of the Murray-Darling system.
In 1845 he discovered the Warrego, Belyando, and Barcoo Rivers.
This exploration led to the opening up of the rich pastoral areas
               of Central Queensland.
