he Persatuan Buddhist Hilir Perak (PBHP) was established in 1987 and has
Tconsistently engaged with individuals from different age groups, including
the elderly, adults, and youth. For instance, it organises Sunday Dharma classes for
children and Dharma camps for Buddhist youth, imparting good moral education to
the younger generation. PBHP also assists impoverished families, promotes resource
recycling, conducts welfare visits, and distributes Buddhist literature, contributing
positively to society while supporting the community.
Tracing the origins of PBHP, a group of Buddhists in 1986 identified the urgent
need to establish a Buddhist community in the Hilir Perak district to propagate the
Dharma. Under the leadership of Chay Seng Fah, a preparatory committee was
formed to actively recruit members and apply for registration with the relevant
authority, eventually receiving a formal approval on 25 August 1987. On 13 March
1988, PBHP held its annual general meeting and elected its first committee board.
From 1986 to 1994, the activities of PBHP took place in members' residences
and rented venues. Due to the limited space for activities, the committee members
decided to build their own centre. After considerable efforts by the committee
members and supporters to raise funds, they finally moved into a newly constructed
centre (Da Jue Hall) located on Jalan Jawa at the end of 1994.
In 2000, PBHP acquired an old single-story semi-detached house behind the
centre for teaching Sunday Dharma classes. In 2002, as activities increased in
frequency, PBHP decided to renovate the old house into a three-story building (Miao
Fa Hall), which was completed and inaugurated in January 2005.
In July 2006, PBHP acquired another building next to its current site and
converted it into a three-story building (Bodhi Hall) to provide greater space for
accommodating attendees during events.
In terms of membership, there were 47 members during its founding period in
4 1987, and this number increased to 730 after moving to the new centre in 1995. By
2023, the membership of the PBHP had risen to over 2,900.
Furthermore, the activities organised by PBHP were driven by various
groups under the committee board, which included meditation retreats, Wesak Day
celebrations, Dharma Talks, Children's Dharma Classes, counselling for secondary
school students, youth and children’s camps, educational and vocational guidance
talks, social welfare initiatives, and Buddhist Hymn Compositions.
As a fellowship-based Buddhist organisation without a resident Sangha
member, all activities of PBHP are accomplished through the heartfelt support of
the committee members and fellow Buddhists, aligning with PBHP’s philosophy of
‘propagating the Dharma and benefiting sentient beings.’
