Bamiyan Valley
Destroyed Standing Buddha
Year of Inscription: 2003
During the Maurya Dynasty, Buddhism
was brought to the Bamiyan area. The
thoughts of Sakyamuni were not only
popular here, but they also managed
to spread all the way to the east, and
entered the country through the Silk
Road. Xuanzang described in his book
that he went to Bamiyan and
witnessed two huge golden Buddha
statues carved out of the cliff. The
statue situated East with 37 meter
high, west statue with 55 meter high.
These two popular standing Buddha
statues, in the site was destroyed by
the Taliban in March 2001, which
stood for more than 1400 years in the
