Sacred City of Anuradhapura
The first entry spot for Buddhism into Sri Lanka Year of Inscription: 1982
Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka,
famous for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Sri
Lankan civilization. It was the centre of Theravada
Buddhism for many centuries. This sacred city was
established around a cutting from the‘tree of
enlightenment’, the Buddha‘s fig tree, brought there in
the 3rd century BC by Sanghamitta.
摩兴陀⻓⽼为国王说法 Asoka’s son Mahinda preached to King
(斯⾥兰卡 Sri Lanka: 2006) Abhayagiri Dagaba which is a monastery serves as a
major site for Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana
Buddhism. Thuparama Dagaba is the earliest Dagoba to
be constructed in the island. It is also the place where
King Devanampiya Tissa enshrined the right collarbone
of the Buddha.Mihintale, is a mountain peak where
Buddhist monk Mahinda and King Devanampiya Tissa
met and inaugurated the presence of Buddhism in Sri
Lanka.
