Medicinal plants (PG 101) Level 1 Clinical Pharmacy-PharmD

                                                      1- GLYCOLYSIS

                 ● Site: cytosol (fluid part of the cytoplasm).

                 ● It occurs in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic).

                 ● Glycolysis splits glucose (C6) into two molecules of pyruvic acid (C3).

                 ● Four ATP and two NADH molecules are produced (net result 2 ATP) as

                 2ATP were consumed.

                 ● The released energy is used for the synthesis of limited number of

ATP molecules in a process known as (substrate level phosphorylation).

                  1- Energy investment phase

                      - Two molecules of ATP are consumed in the substrate phosphorylation of

glucose into glucose-6-phosphate, the other in the formation of fructose-1,6-

                         bisphosphate.

                  2-Energy harvesting phase

                      - Four molecules of ATP and two NADH are produced. It ends up with formation

                         of two pyruvate molecules
