1- GLYCOLYSIS
● Site: cytosol (fluid part of the cytoplasm).
● It occurs in the absence of oxygen (anaerobic).
● Glycolysis splits glucose (C6) into two molecules of pyruvic acid (C3).
● Four ATP and two NADH molecules are produced (net result 2 ATP) as
2ATP were consumed.
● The released energy is used for the synthesis of limited number of
ATP molecules in a process known as (substrate level phosphorylation).
1- Energy investment phase
- Two molecules of ATP are consumed in the substrate phosphorylation of
glucose into glucose-6-phosphate, the other in the formation of fructose-1,6-
bisphosphate.
2-Energy harvesting phase
- Four molecules of ATP and two NADH are produced.It ends up with formation
of two pyruvate molecules
