                                             Classification of Crude Drugs




                  1.  Alphabetical: arrangement system in which the plants are arranged according to


                      their, either Latin or English names.


                  2.  Taxonomic: The drugs are arranged according to the taxonomical classification


                      of their plants from which they are obtained as in phyla, orders, families, genera,


                      and species.


                  3.  Morphological: The drugs are grouped into classes according to the medicinally


                      used organ of the plant (the part used of the plant), e.g., leaves, herbs, seeds,


                      fruits etc.


                  4.  Pharmacological:  The  drugs  are  grouped  according  to  the  pharmacological


                      action of their most important active constituents or therapeutic use e.g., laxative


                      drugs, cardio-active drugs, antispasmodic drugs, etc.


                  5.  Chemical: The drugs are divided into groups according to their most important


                      active  constituents  e.g.,  drugs  containing  alkaloids,  drugs  containing


                      glycosides, drugs containing volatile oils, etc.
