Medicinal plants (PG 101) Level 1 Clinical Pharmacy-PharmD
Treatment of drugs before drying
Some drugs as underground organs need cleaning and garbling. The cleaning
process includes:
1- The removal of soil particles from the drugs either by shaking, brushing, or
washing under steam of water.
2- In some cases small rootlets are cut off as in rhubarb and liquorice, and they are
peeled.
3- Some drugs such as ginger and cinnamon are decorticated to acquire a good
appearance or to remove tissues containing undesirable substances.
4- Garbling is the process of the removal of foreign matters such as sand, dirt, or
other parts of the plants from the drug. This can be achieved either by hand or by a
special machine. Metallic particles can be removed by passing the drug over a big
magnet.
✓ The complete removal of foreign material is not practical, and for this reason
the pharmacopoeias state certain limits of them.
