                                            Bitter principle

                       • Natural compounds composed of C, H, O but not N, they don´t have

a definite common structure but they are all bitter in taste.

                      EX: Khellin in Ammivisnaga

                                                       OCH 3

                                               O O CH 3

                                                       OCH O
                                                             3

                   Chemical test:

Add few NaOH / KOH pellets to a drop of water extract of Ammi visnaga

(Khellin extract) → rose red color is developed.

✓ Khellin is a chromone bitter principle present in Ammi visnaga

                                                           protein.

✓ Used as a smooth muscle relaxant (ease passage of renal calculi),

in bronchial asthma, angina, antispasmodic for renal & bilary

A micro method for estimation of khellin in Ammi visnaga fruits

                   Principle

Preparative isolation of khellin then measuring the A or %

transmittance at UV 420 nm after the development of yellow color
