Uses of volatile oils:
1- Volatile oils possess a wide range of pharmacological activities:
e.g. smooth muscle relaxant, mucolytic, stomachic, antibacterial, antifungal, carminative,
diuretic, …etc.
2- On the other hand volatile oils are economically important since they used in perfume and
cosmetics
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is a form of alternative and complementary medicine that uses volatile oil for
the purpose of affecting a person's mood or health.
Peppermint oil
Useful for:
• alleviating headaches
• relieving digestive issues such as gas or heartburn
• reduces feelings of stress and anxiety
• kills germs (particularly in the mouth)
• freshens air
• cooling and refreshing
• removes redness and irritating skin issues
• helps with congestion
Examples and uses:
Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
• Anti-protozoal • Anti-viral
• Anti-fungal • Anti-bacterial
• Anticancer • Anti-inflammatory
• Antioxidant
Clove (Eugenia caryophyllata)
• Antiseptic, Antifungal
• Relieves Toothache
Sandalwood oil (Santalum album)
• Aphrodisiac
• prevent rashes and inflammations
• Genito-urinary antiseptic
