              desoxy-hexoses are D-digitoxose (Digitalis

glycosides such as digitoxin, gitoxin and digoxin),

               and D-cymarose (3-Methyl-ether of D-digitoxose, Stophanthus Kombé

glycosides such as K-strophanthin) and L-oleandrose (Nerium oleander

              glycoside, oleandrin).

              Keller-kelliani test: (see above)

              • 2,6-didesoxy-sugars give positive results whether in free state or glycoside.

              • Dissolve in glacial acetic acid containing FeCl 3, add H 2SO 4 containing FeCl 3.

An intense blue color develops at the interface between the two layers, then

spreads into the glacial acetic acid layer, indicating positive test.

                                                  5) Amino-sugar

                                         D-Glucosamine (Chitosamine):

              Chemical Structure: 2-Amino-2-desoxy-D-glucopyranose.

              ▪ Glucosamine is a natural amino-monosaccharide (i.e. amino-sugar compound),

which is normally present in the human body. It is found in foods such as meat,
                fish and poultry.

              ▪ 2-Amino-2-deoxy-D-glucose is the most abundant amino-sugar occurring
widely as its N-acetylated derivative in polysaccharides such as chitin which

is analogous to cellulose and found in the exoskeleton of crustacean.
