Importance:

1. Essential for the normal functioning of living cells and is involved in many

enzyme reactions.

2. Required for the development of cartilage, teeth and bones, wound healing and

for aiding the absorption of iron from the intestine.

Use: 1)To cure Scurvy “its deficiency disease”. 2) Free radical scavenger

3) As antioxidant in some pharmaceutical preparations.

Calcium Gluconate

• It is the calcium salt of gluconic acid. Dissolves slowly in water (I in 30) and

in boiling water (I in 5) and decomposed by mineral acids.

Preparation: Electrolytic oxidation (a direct electric current; DC, to drive non-

spontaneous chemical reaction) of glucose in the presence of calcium carbonate.
