3.10. STEERING SYSTEM
The vessel is fitted with a hydraulic power steering system that is powered
by an electric hydraulic pump. This is fitted in the rudder space compart-
ment on the port side of the engine room bulkhead. The electrical hydrau-
lic pump is started on the wheelhouse dashboard.
The power steering makes the driving of the vessel effortless and very
responsive to helm movement. The twin CJR rudders are fitted to the
The vessel can be helmed from four positions:
• From the fly bridge, with the steering wheel.
• From the Helmsman’s seat in the wheelhouse, with the steering wheel.
From the aft deck, in the emergency steering mode. When there has been a hydraulic power
steering system failure, the steering bypass valve will have to be opened first, this is in the
rudder compartment on the port side and the emergency steering tiller fitted through the deck on
the port or starboard sides, to the top of the rudder post.
3.10. STEERING SYSTEM
The vessel has been fitted with an electrical system comprising of the following basic parts:
• Each engine has its own starting battery bank, which is charged from each engine alternator -
refer to electrical drawing page 2.
The engine’s 24 V DC system comprises of the two starting battery banks. Each battery bank
has two 12 V 500 Ah batteries connected in series, to make up the 24 V DC. The batteries are
stored in a water-resistant battery box fitted in the rudder compartment on the starboard side.
There are three battery isolator switches on the main engine starting distribution board (DB).
Each engine has one isolator switch to switch power on, with which to start the engine. There
is also a parallel switch to double bank the batteries, in case one starting bank is flat.
Connected to each battery bank is a battery charger to maintain the batteries at the required
voltage. Refer to electrical drawing pg 2. These chargers are mounted on the starboard side
battery isolator junction box.
• There is a 24 V DC battery bank comprising of two 12 V 200 Ah batteries connected in series
-Refer to electrical drawings. This battery bank supplies electrical power to various systems on
the vessel, and are charged by two 250 Ah alternators, one fitted to each engine, see electrical
drawing for this.
• There is a radio supply comprising of two 12 V DC 95 Ah batteries connected in series to make
up the 24 V DC supply to the vessels radios. The batteries are under the deck at the Bosun’s seat
area in the wheelhouse. See electrical drawing pg 28 and 29.
